The Most Uneventful Weekend Ever

Yup, you guessed it. This is not going to be a happy post. (Or maybe yes, if my life has been too eventful lately. Not!)

Here's what happened to me this weekend:
  • Friday night - Have a banana shake at our office watering hole from 5:30pm to 6pm. FYI: I usually have beer. Something non-alcoholic is a sign that something is definitely wrong.
  • Saturday morning - See the doctor for my sinusitis. After prodding a 6-inch metal stick up my nose, the doctor prescribes me everything he can think of. Get some scolding from the doctor about why I took this long to see him. (He's old and Chinese. I am afraid of him.)
  • Saturday afternoon till night - Sleep and watch some TV.
  • Saturday - Sleep and watch some TV.
  • Extra update, Monday - Work a little and try not to sleep because of the sleep-inducing medicine. Go home directly after work. Lie down.
The frustrating thing is, I've been staying home for the past 2 weeks because I wanted to get rid of my sinusitis. I just doesn't want to go away!

I have to go back to the doctor on Thursday morning so that he can see if his medicine is working. You are going to be hearing this for the last time, promise, because I am going to get well soon...

I want to get well!

Counting the Days

For the past few weeks (or months), I have been reading a book by Eckhart Tolle called The Power of Now. So far, the main takeaway I have from his book is that happiness can only be achieved if we focus on the NOW. Not the future. Not the past.

The book is a little hard to read, because it is not a structured book, but rather a series of questions and the authors' answers to them. I find it a bit of a bore sometimes, because he repeats ideas and explanations. But I gather that it's for effect.

Anyway, the reason I mentioned the book is that I know I have to concentrate on the NOW, but due to my impending move to Barcelona, my un-trained brain, more often than not, wanders into the future to my life at IESE. It's okay, I suppose, but because of it, I become daydream-y most of the time. This is not good, especially because it does not get me in the mood for working when I should be. All I can think about is that I am going to quit soon and that I'm not really chasing a promotion or a raise.

Why not quit now? I'm really thinking about it, but financially, it's going to be really hard.

So, to change the topic and focus on the NOW, these are my tasks at hand before August rolls around.
  1. Learn Spanish - I am starting this tomorrow with my first class.
  2. Take a course on Excel - Very important for the MBA, I was told.
  3. Learn more about the Financial world - Being a technical person and taking a technical course didn't really prepare me for the career that I will probably face when I start my MBA. Being the planner that I am, I should start reading up.
Hey, it feels good that I am actually trying to do something now.

Breathe in, breathe out.

things to be excited about

OK. While I have this bright and shiny new blog to work with, I was thinking of taking my coworker's suggestion of making sort of a travelogue of my travels lately to the northern and southern parts of the Philippines. (How general could that sound?) But since I would have to upload pictures in order to do that, and I am in no mood to figure out how to upload pictures now, I have decided to write a motivational piece for myself. I don't have an audience yet, so I guess I am the only one who will read this. Here goes:
  1. I am moving to Barcelona in August - This was quite surreal when it hit me early last month. I am finally getting to study for an MBA after years and years of procrastinating. It's great that I was accepted to IESE, one of the best business schools in the world, or Europe, whoever's ranking you believe. I will probably be blogging a lot about this as time goes nearer that day.
  2. I am starting my Spanish lessons next week - I enrolled in Instituto Cervantes' basic Spanish program. IC's spanking new building is pretty nice (Maybe I should take pictures when I'm there more often). The architecture is very modern with many straight lines yet earthy because of its color and finishing. I like architecture, so I will have lots of moments admiring that building. Hmm... lots of funding from Spain, I suppose. Another good thing is that the lessons don't cost a lot. Cheap, in fact, compared to other language centers such as Berlitz or Languages International. IC charges only Php2,400+ for 30 hours of lessons with a real Spaniard. Good deal.
  3. Holy Week is coming up - Although I have no great vacation plans for the coming holidays, I am looking forward to a lot of R&R. I can't remember the last time I had a long vacation. I just want to lie down in a warm, shaded spot, curl up with a good book, and have nobody disturb me.
To tell you the truth, I have been bored lately... More likely because after work I just go home and rest so that I will finally recover from my chronic sinusitis turned cold/cough. I have had many suggestions from family and my doctor best friend, and I'm trying all of them out so that I will finally get out of this misery. (Oh yes. Drama, drama.)

On a warm windless night...

...I decided yet again to start a blog. Well, I've had blogs before, and my main problem with them was that I didn't have enough things to write about! (Talk about a boring life, huh?)
So in my unending battle with boredom and "nothing-is-happening-to-my-life" moments, I realize that I should somehow document things I've done or am doing just to prove myself wrong. After getting a laptop and some free time, I think I should be more up to it now.
So, here it goes!
